At 1h30 pm yesterday, a terrible and freak traffic accident caused by chain reaction left two people dead in La Prairie a suburb outside Montreal, Canada. Vehicles traveling in the westbound lanes of Highway 15 faced a sudden snow blizzard created by strong winds coming from the adjacent frozen St-Lawrence River at the St-Henri Street exit. Cars collided along a stretch of the busy highway that runs along the water shores. An estimated staggering number of 200 vehicles are believed to have been involved to different degrees in the collision. In the most significant area of the pileup, a public transit bus lays in wreck next to a school bus among other heavy and smaller vehicles. Over an hour after impact and during the time the video was filmed people remained trapped in the debris. Fire fighters used the assistance of a heavy tow truck to lift a truck off another car in hope of saving a trapped person. They hooked a chain to the rear of the pickup truck to raise and gain access to a car crushed underneath. Three hospitals in the region declared a "Code Orange" meaning they are expecting a surge of patients arrival due to exceptional circumstances. An estimated total of 60 victims were transported and required medical help for the trauma or shock they suffered in the crash. Another help center for victims was setup at Multifunctional Center Guy Dupré in La Prairie where victims lesser injuries were brought. Hours into the incident, people remained trapped on the highway taking shelter in their damaged vehicles or walking away in the blowing snow. Both sides of the highway have been shut during the aftermath in order to perform heavy duty high risk rescue operation on the field. One side later re-opened throughput the night allowing eastbound traffic to flow freely again. Roads built along the shores are subject to dangerous and sudden weather phenomenon as this case may have shown. Snow built up in the affected lanes can be seen from an elevated point of view while other parts of the roadway are dry. In the aftermath of the tragedy, the occasional powerful gusts of blowing snow hid the otherwise clear blue sky and buried some of the wrecked cars in a surreal effect.
