Verdun: Man drowns while trying to swim across river 8-30-2024

Complete and utter tragedy today August 30th 2024 when the body of a man in his twenties was found after hours of research after he disappeared during a swim at a public beach park. A pair of friends attempted to swim across the river at Verdun Beach to reach Ile-des-Soeurs and come back in Montréal, Québec, Canada but on the way back one of the two people sank and disappeared under the water surface. Only one out of the two in the duo came back to the departure point at Verdun Beach at 4h pm when a water rescue mission was launched. Montréal fire department responded in the early moments after the young man went missing in waters believed to be no more than 3 meters deep according to communications intercepted on SIM emergency scanner radios. An array of emergency service personnel joined efforts in an attempt to locate the missing person including SIM water rescue firefighters, SPVM water rescue unit and the coast guard who worked relentlessly until 8h pm when the body of the drowning victim was found. Crews are still at the scene at this time to conduct a body recovery mission as nightfall brought colder temperatures to the city.
